Well, it’s that time of year; the nights are getting longer and the days are getting colder. If you’re feeling it, your trees are feeling it- and are in need of some winter tree care.
Whether you’re new to the Denver area or simply need some extra help with your winter tree care, you’ve come to the right place! ArborScape’s experience here is unmatched! We know the landscape well enough to know just what trees need this time of year.
While there are options for prepping your tree for dormancy in winter, like a Fall Root Stimulator or Iron Treatment, those are timely services that are weather-dependent. Since we’re past those application times, we’ll focus on what you can do now to get your trees ready for winter.
Options for Winter Tree Care

One important part of tree care is proper watering. We’ve talked at length about how to water your trees, especially in our arid climate and tendency for droughts. But winter watering is especially important for trees, even with the amount of snow we get.
We typically offer this service once a month during the winter months, depending on how much snow we receive and how much actually sticks. For instance, if you’re scheduled to have this service but there’s still snow surrounding the trees, we’ll reschedule you for a later date.
This will look different than when we spray your trees for insect control- rather than direct the water toward the trunk, we’ll want to water from the base of the tree and as wide in circumference as the tree’s canopy. This will ensure water coverage over the root system.
Another important option for winter tree care is mulching the base of your tree. This will help conserve water preservation so it doesn’t evaporate as quickly.
There are a variety of ways to properly mulch your tree, but if you’re looking for a more organic way, using your unraked leaves is a great additive, as they contain a lot of nutrients that can keep your tree healthy throughout the season.
As leaders in the green industry, we live by sustainable practices, so We recycle the woodchips on-site and bring them back to our shop to dye and resell as mulch. With an abundance of nutrients, our mulch can also add more color and detail to your yard! We sell colors like natural brown, espresso brown, red, black, and green!
Because we’re so close to the sun, wrapping young trees is another important aspect of winter tree care. While some think wrapping keeps the trees warm, it actually acts more like a sun barrier.
Most trees are bare this time of year and therefore susceptible to sunscald. The frozen soil and sun’s burning rays can confuse the tree’s dormant cells, leading to cracked and peeling bark.
While the damage may not be immediate, if left untreated, it can invite pests and diseases that can cause more damage.
While some people wrap their trees in blankets or plastic, we’ve found that electrical tape and light-colored crepe paper work best as a barrier due to the elasticity and ability to shed water, keeping your trees safe and dry from winter frost.
in order to best protect these trees, you’ll want to wrap the trunk just right. You’ll start by winding the wrap from the base of the trunk to the first major branch. This will protect the trunk by keeping the sun’s rays off the trunk.
These are just a few options for optimal winter tree care. We also reserve time in the winter for pruning certain trees that are most prone to fire blight. Since trees are dormant in winter, the fire blight can’t spread as easily, making it safer to prune these trees during this season.
Pruning in general is a great way to keep your trees healthy, as pruning can be done to remove dead or diseased branches, thus creating room for new growth as spring approaches.
