Get the Intel on Watering Trees

However, tree planting requires some care after the transplant. While ArborScape offers an array of fertilization and spray services, one of the most critical aspects is correctly watering trees to ensure a proper transplant.

While watering may seem like a simple task, it’s important to figure out what the proper amount is, as under or overwatering can lead to a failed transplant.

Properly watering trees is crucial in part due to our Coloradan soil, and another aspect is due to the altitude and our proximity to the sun. So yes, you can always look up how to water your newly planted trees, but you may not always find the best advice for your tree and location.

However, ArborScape has been servicing Denver for over 25 years. Our certified arborists have become very familiar with the landscape and understand how watering trees can help them avoid drought stress throughout their life cycle.

For starters, we recommend planting in late spring or early fall. Due to our Colorado temperatures, the soil is too dry and hot in the summer and too frozen in the winter for a healthy transplant. When the soil is like that, the roots can’t grow properly or absorb the right nutrients.

Once planted, proper watering is crucial to becoming established in your yard. Without adequate water, the tree’s root system can go into shock and will struggle in growing beyond the root ball. Typically, the amount of water a tree needs is dependent on its age and trunk’s diameter. 

Watering Trees Properly

For instance, a newly planted tree will need to be watered each day for the first week to get rid of any air pockets in the soil that could potentially lead to root rot. However, you’ll still want to take care not to overwater your tree, as that can cause the roots to drown. 

For young trees, we recommend using about 10 gallons of water per inch of the trunk’s diameter each month; e.g, a trunk 2 inches in diameter will require 20 gallons of water each month. 

It can be a little easier to keep track of it by divvying up the watering by weeks. If you know your tree needs 20 gallons of water per month, that’s roughly 4-5 gallons per week, and then you can separate that up into the days.

We also recommend watering when it’s cool out, so earlier in the morning or later at night. That will give the soil adequate time to absorb the water.

Meanwhile, more mature trees that are 10 inches or more in diameter will need 15 gallons of water per inch in diameter. For example, a tree 10 inches in diameter would need 150 gallons of water per month.

If you’re unsure about the diameter of your tree’s trunk, you can always use a tape measure to find how many inches it is around (the circumference) and then divide by 3.14. 

For example, 30 inches in circumference divided by 3.14 would equal about 9.5 inches in diameter, meaning your tree will need about 95 gallons of water each month.

Watering trees is also important during the dormant season as well. However, you won’t need to water as much; only about once a month is really necessary. 

As we mentioned earlier, our altitude means we’re a lot closer to the sun, and despite the amount of snow we get, most of that will evaporate rather than get absorbed into the soil, making watering trees just as important during the winter as the summer.

Timely Trees: Cottonwood Trees in Colorado

Have your allergies been letting you know what trees are budding? Our favorite is probably the cottonwood trees in Colorado. March marks the beginning of spring, but here in Colorado, we’re still dealing with sporadic weather that can sometimes delay the onstart of trees budding.
